Eye Exam for Reading Glasses
At some point in your life, you’re bound to require reading glasses. While there are some reading glasses readily available at pharmacies, getting prescription glasses for reading is the ideal way to avoid eyestrain when sitting down with a book, a magazine, a laptop, or a tablet.
Gordon Wong Eye Designs & Optometry can help you get prescription reading glasses if you live in the Del Mar and La Jolla, CA area. Let’s go over some of the basics of reading glasses, starting with when you’ll need them.
Signs You Need Reading Glasses
Before getting reading glasses, you’ll probably notice some signs you need them before getting an eye exam. This includes:
- Difficulty reading text on pages or screens
- Constantly adjusting the distance you hold reading materials from your face
- Squinting in order to read books and other reading materials
- Difficulty reading in dim light or low light
- Eye fatigue after reading
- Headaches after reading
Many times these issues become more pronounced as you reach middle age. That’s when a condition known as presbyopia sets in. This blurring of vision is a natural part of the aging process.
When You Should Schedule an Eye Exam
Ideally, you should undergo an eye exam as soon as you notice major changes in your vision. It is better to get your eyes checked sooner rather than later so you can avoid problems with eye strain when going about your day.
You should definitely see a doctor as soon as possible if you notice a dramatic and sudden change in your vision. This could be an early warning sign of an issue apart from age-related vision loss.
Common Tests When Prescribing Reading Glasses
When performing a vision exam for reading glasses, you can expect to undergo a full examination. This will allow an eye doctor to check on your current vision needs and detect possible issues with the structures of the eyes.
You can expect the following:
- Refraction Test - The key exam for determining your current description. Using a tool known as a phoropter, an eye doctor can move lenses of different strengths in front of your eye. This will help determine your ideal prescription in each eye.
- Dilated Pupillary Exam - You may be given drops to dilate your pupils and allow an eye doctor to check for signs of retinal disease.
- Non-Contact Tonometry - This test will examine the amount of pressure within your eye (intraocular pressure) with a safe puff of air. This test is key in early diagnosis of glaucoma.
- Slit-Lamp Exam - With this test, a doctor examines your eye through a microscope while shining a slit-shaped light inside. This test can be used to detect cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other eye problems.
