Description
Whether a patient will feel discomfort during and after laser eye surgery at our La Jolla-based San Diego practice depends on the individual and the specific procedure being performed. Patients who undergo LASIK generally feel no pain because of the creation of the flap during surgery. Patients who undergo PRK may experience minimal discomfort during the 7 to 10 day healing period following surgery.

People oftentimes ask, "Is there any pain associated with laser vision
correction?" The answer really depends on the patient, as well as which
procedure is being done. Some patients have a very high threshold for pain.
Other patients have a low threshold for pain. In terms of the procedure,
with LASIK there's little or no pain or discomfort because of the creation
of the flap. With PRK, we're doing surgery on the direct surface of the
eye, so the surface has to take about seven to ten days to heal. Sometimes,
there can be some discomfort for the first two or three days after that
surgery.
